PRINCIPAL's Message

9/8/20

Hello Bobcat families!

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year. Dare I say, a year like no other. At Brier, we have the tradition of starting our events in community. I invite you to close your eyes for a moment and envision being in our gym with a few hundred other excited Bobcats. Whereas we cannot be in the same space physically, our spirit of community and togetherness remains steadfast.

Like all school years, this year is filled with possibilities and with excitement. There is nothing quite like the energy of a new school year. The start of this year also brings challenges. We are challenged more than ever to think creatively about how to meet the learning needs of all of our students.  This virtual format requires us to think outside the box, to be flexible in our thinking, to adapt our strategies and to learn new techniques. I am confident that our staff is up to this challenge.

Just as if we were in the building, our team will focus heavily these first two weeks on building relationships with students and with families. We know a primary factor in students learning is feeling connected to and valued by their teacher. This connection and the connection with you, their parents and guardians has never been more essential. As you have hopefully seen in our communications, the first ten days of school are half days. This allows every teacher to meet with every student and their family individually. The purpose is to get to know one another, to learn about the strengths and needs of your student and for teachers and parents/guardians to connect and have a strong communication system in place.

We will also focus initial efforts on assessing our students. With school closure this past spring, we need to know where our students are academically and social emotionally in order to address their individual learning needs.

Speaking of this past spring. I invite us all to remember that we were learning about Covid and there were many unknowns. This fall, we have been living with and learning about Covid for a period of time. This fall will be different than the spring. One big difference is that attendance is mandatory. If a student needs to miss due to illness or an appointment, follow the same procedures you would as if we were in the building. Schools are also accountable for all instructional minutes. Unlike in the spring when initially we were not allowed to provide new instruction, this school year, we must provide the required instructional minutes. We will be grading assignments and giving final grades.

We have always named that family/school partnership is key to student success. This is more true now than ever before. With remote learning families are being asked to support their student learning from home and we don’t have our students here with us to adjust to their needs and provide the individual support throughout the day like usual. That is our current reality but together we can do this.  Please, keep the lines of communication open with your teacher and with our support staff. Together, we can make this a successful learning year.

Families, we are in uncharted territory but we know that Bobcats always persevere and that we can do virtually anything.  Together, we will make 2020-2021 a successful year of learning and kindness.  Thank you.

In partnership,

Johnna

Welcome to Brier Elementary, home of the Bobcats!

We start every day with reciting our pledge: “At Brier, we are Responsible, Kind, Respectful and Safe. I am ready to learn and will encourage others to be successful because learning comes first!” In order for students to become responsible, contributing citizens in our rapidly changing and interdependent world, they need to be equipped with the necessary academic and interpersonal skills. We believe strongly in providing a safe, supportive learning environment that allows every student to be challenged and to learn at their fullest.

At Brier, we are always striving to provide every student with a rigorous academic program, one that focuses on building strong foundational skills as well as strong critical thinking skills. Our students need to be prepared to live and work in our continually changing world where knowing how to be a learner and how to communicate their ideas to others is essential. In addition to our academic program, our school community offers a variety of after school activities to further extend learning.

We also believe that our students need to have the interpersonal skills to succeed in our global society. We intentionally teach our students to be responsible, kind, respectful and safe citizens of our school, our community and our world, through our character education work. We model and explicitly teach these skills, we recognize students for demonstrating these skills and we offer the opportunity to participate in activities that benefit the larger community.

We encourage family and community participation at BRE. Together we can do more for our students! We look forward to working in partnership with our families so that we can provide a rich learning experience every day.

Welcome to Brier!
